How To Kill Kālī | The Three Sacrifices of Tāntrik Sādhana
Dec 15, 2025

One of the distinctive features of Kālī pūjā is animal sacrifice. But you know, this only practice for a much greater sacrifice: the killing of the paśu, that is, one's own sense of limited self.

Notice how Sri Ramakrishna used the same sword that is reserved for the goat sacrifice to offer Mā Kālī his own head (the best form of Nara Bali, human sacrifice) and also how later in his sādhana, he used a subtle, internal sword to cut even call in half!

This krama (process) of killing the literal, ex...

Dec 12, 2025

On the 8th day of the waning moon in the Vedic calendar month of Mrgaśirsha, we celebrate the birth anniversary of Holy Mother Sārada Devī. This an exceedingly auspicious a day for our lineage especially if not also for all worshippers of the Divine Mother everywhere in every lineage. It is a special day for everyone, actually, because today, we celebrate the "avatarahood" of the Divine Mother Herself!

In 2023, we gave the talk The Tantra of Holy Mother Sarada Devi exploring Holy Mother's central teaching, "don't find fault with others/no one...

First, in How To Get Possesed By Kālī we carefully explained what it is to be a paśu or anu, a discreet unit of consciousness (i.e an embodied soul or jīva) and then carefully pointed out why the ānavopaya is so suited for most of us, despite our pretense at high-flying non-dual philosophies! The Two Extremes of Kālī Worship
Nov 16, 2025

After we performed our Śyāmā Kālī Pūjā this year (which you can watch here), we took up a short, concise but I think quite concentrated discussion on how image worship, the danger of superimposing our projections unto Kālī & the check and balance of taking seriously what Her saints have had to say about Her through their own mystical experiences throughout history. Most importantly, we point to the two "extreme" ends of the spectrum when it comes to Kālī devotees and we propose a sort of synthesis of these two, that I pray, will lead to a deeper...

The Essence of Tantra | & Why You Should Learn Pūjā

Some time ago on the 11th of September, we gave this talk on the very heart of our tradition and practice. September 11th in 1893 was the day Swami Vivekananda opened his transmission to the West (and the the world at large) at the Parliament of World Religions so for us it is a very sacred day when we commemorate the "turning of the wheel of dharma" yet again!

How To Say Grounded & Reasonable In Kālī Pūjā
Nov 16, 2025

Before we plunged into the fervor of Śyāma Kālī Pūjā, we paused to reflect on an important question that Sandhyā Devī astutely asked one morning which was more or less along the lines of "how can we verify the truth claims of the tradition"? "how do we stay sane, grounded & reasonable while practicing a somewhat radical form of Tantra?" "how do we know that our spiritual experiences are legitimate and not a function of delusion or egoic thinking?" (I paraphrase).

Essentially, before participating fully in something, we have to ask if there are checks and balan...

One of my favorite lectures of all time. We inquire into some "scary" themes in spiritual life like the potential difference between my will and God's will, as it is understood across various traditions with an emphasis on the life-affirming, immanence-oriented and desire-positive view of the Goddess traditions. We make a few remarks about why vampires as such a good metaphor for Tantrik spirituality and point out how the theme of vampirism appears in our tradition in the form Dākinīs and Yoginīs, Mā's fierce fanged, bloodthirsty attendants! We discuss Dākinī pūjā towards the end.  Duration: 02:23:01

One of the most important ideas in Tantra (and often one of the most misunderstood and most difficult to discuss) is Kuṇḍalinī! What exactly is this "serpent power", as Arthur Avalonji once called it? Specifically in this talk, we relate Kuṇḍalinī to Kālī to show her centrality in the Kaula tradition of Tantra! Jun 20, 2025

In our recent lectures like Advice to Spiritual Teachers & Aspirants & Sex, Drugs & Choosing A Guru | Q&A we've been going over our ideals and values as a community, using Swami Vivekananda's reflections on Sri Ramakrishna as our guiding principles.

Recently also we took a look at our lineage and heritage to see where we've been! Now, we can look into the future and ask, "well, where are we going?"

I want to discuss "our mission" as per Myra Mā's excellent inquiry in class the other day. What's our purpose? What's the manifesto? What's to be...

Naturally, we need to talk about issues of sex, money and power which are most often the downfall of spiritual leaders and spiritual communities. Having clear ideals and having the courage to hold one another to them is perhaps the most important thing w...

3 Forms of Śiva: Sadā-śiva, Bhairava & Śava-śiva
Jun 17, 2025

In one sense, Śiva means the impersonal absolute Consciousness which is the very essence of the Self (as we pointed out in this video What Is "Shiva"? and also in The Secret Teaching of Bhairava) but in another sense, that which is the formless impersonal Godhead is also, by virtue of His vimarśa-śakti (i.e God's reflexive ability), the personal God who creates, maintains and destroys the universe and who can, at will, manifest as many different forms to suit different occasions and bhāvas (moods).

In other words, as the Personal God (Saguna Brahman), Shiv...

Friday the 13th | According to Tantra
Jun 13, 2025

To celebrate today's occasion, we took the opportunity to look at the importance of divine immanence as well as the power and pervasiveness and superstition: first, we discussed the Norse and Biblical origins of the Western fear of the number 13, and the fear of Friday as being Venus' day, a day of decadence, sense indulgence and beauty, which are things that all feared and avoided by transcendelist "father sky only" type traditions.

We discuss the two types of reclamation: first, by practitioners in the Goddess tradition who are reframing this day at the celebration of the Divine...

How To Really Worship Kālī | Free Will vs Determinism
Jun 03, 2025

In this talk, we develop some the ideas from the Is There Free Will? lecture: if there is no free will, then, what's the point exactly? Isn't spiritual life all about freedom? If freedom is the goal, can such a freedom ever be articulated on the level of the embodied individual if after all, as we claimed last week, there is no freedom in a real sense for the embodied individual since Mother alone is doing everything? What then is "moksha", liberation, exactly?

To answer all of these important questions, we take up Thakur Sri Ramakrishna's definition...

After giving two talks establishing God (Proof for God & What is God in Tantra?) a in response to various objections from non-theistic traditions like scientific materialism, Buddhism, Sāmkhya & Advaita Vedanta, we are now left with an interesting question: what about the Problem of Evil?

The usual response to this dilemma from the theistic position is to assert free-will. God is indeed all-powerful and all-good and because of that goodness, God cannot be a tyrant and so affords each individual the dignity of free-will; the reason there is any evil in the world at all then is b...

How To Realize God
Jun 02, 2025

In Verse 104, of the Vijñāna-Bhairava Tantra, we come across a profound teaching:

I felt that this verse captured the very essence of spiritual life and spelled out the whole journey from start to finish which is a journey from limitation to absolute freedom, from jīva (limited individuality) to śīva (all inclusive one-ness), from selfishness...

Perhaps one of the reasons all the various religions in the world are fighting and killing each other is because they never took the time to clarify to one another what, precisely, they meant by the term "God"?

Often when atheists criticize religion, they only conceive of God along Abrahamic lines, and poorly at that. Perhaps one of the most important and foundational lectures we've ever done, this talk features a broad overview of Tantrik non-duality in the beginning and then moves on to make a case for a Vedic lifestyle and basic devotion as important foundations for more dramatic, esoteric, non-dual and transgressive practices of Goddess-oriented tantra.

We also study the Vedic (and pre-Vedic) roots of Tantra and look at a few of the early schools of our tradition such as the Mīmāmsa, Pāśupata, Lakulīśa, Nyāya & Vaiśeshika to derive from them some grounding ideas for practici...

The 3 Malas: 3 Reasons Why You're Not Enlightened
Mar 25, 2025

We now turn to a very sophisticated discussion about the reasons why we are not immediately, spontaneously aware of the fact that we are non-dual, pure Consciousness in which the world shines non-differently. If I am Shiva, as this tradition tells me, then why don't I know it? How does Shiva hide himself from himself? To explain the mechanism of self-concealment (and also to point the way to instant liberation), we receive this teaching on the 3 malas, the 3 "impurities." In Shaiva Siddhānta, these malas are seen as substantive (i.e real) and therefore must be actually removed through g...

Vivekananda's Triangle of Love & How Jñāna = Bhakti
Mar 24, 2025

There have been many, many profound moments in Swami Vivekananda's Bhakti Yoga but this is perhaps the signature lecture: the "triangle of love". Here, Swamiji defines just what prema, true ecstatic love for God looks like: this is the kind of love that knows no bargaining and knows no fear; It has nothing to gain and nothing to lose; It is It's own Highest Ideal!

In this short lecture, we really come face to face with what Bhakti really is.

And right before this lecture, Swami Vivekananda offers a note of reconciliation between Bhakti and Jñ...

The Perfect Jñāni, Knower of God is the Perfect Bhakta, Lover of God
Mar 23, 2025

In our Vivekananda's Triangle of Love & How Jñāna = Bhakti we introduced Swamiji's signature idea: the three things that make love worthy of the name as well as the idea that Bhakti, Devotion and Jñāna, Philosophy are really ultimately the same thing. This is the core theme of the book, I think. Now, in this lecture, we expound on those two ideas by reading the next lecture, "The God of Love is His Own Proof" which really drives home the point of how Jñāna and Bhakti are two ways of describing the same thing. We quote two verses...

3 Tantrik Meditations on Sarasvatī
Mar 21, 2025

In our paddathi (ritual manual), throughout the nyāsa section which we've been studying together over the past few weeks, we find these Sanskrit verses. They are all dhyāna-ślokas, meditation mantras for the Goddess of Speech, Parā Devī or Sarasvatī. This argues the case that nyāsa is not only about consecrating the body, it is also about invoking the Goddess of Speech and meditating upon her as an act of devotion. In a sense, the nyāsa section in our pūjā is itself a kind of Sarasvatī Pūjā! Anyway, since we weren't able to have to have...

Why Are Eclipses So Important in Tantra?
Mar 20, 2025

Last week on Friday we had a full moon and total lunar eclipse! In the light (or lack thereof) of that (haha), and because we are entering into eclipse season, we took some time on Friday to discuss the Tantrik significance of the eclipse, both lunar and solar. Who exactly is Rahu and why is he considered an inauspicious graha, planetary spirit? How does Rahu cause the eclipse? And are eclipses auspicious or inauspicious? We ask these and other questions. We look at verse 8 of our text, the Paramārthasāra of Abhinava Gupta where he uses the eclipse as...

Śankara vs Rāmānuja vs Caitanya vs Abhinava Gupta vs Rāmakrishna
Mar 19, 2025

Usually, after a slew of lectures on Sri Caitanya and Tantrik Vaishnavism, which we tend to do around Gaur Purnima, we like to bask in the afterglow by simply comparing Caitanya's philosophy to the other schools that we tend to study in our community. In last year's talk called Nārada vs Caitanya vs Rāmakrishna on Bhakti Philosophy we specifically compared the different schools based on their points on Bhakti in theory and practice. In this talk, we take a more philosophical, metaphysical and soteriological and maybe even more general, "birds-eye-view" approach to some of these schools differ fr...

Nārada vs Caitanya vs Rāmakrishna on Bhakti Philosophy
Mar 19, 2025

After we did our series of lectures on Caitanya and the acintya bhedābedha philosophy of Bengal school of Vaishnavism last year, we did this "bonus talk" comparing Caitanya's philosophy and practice of Bhakti to that of Śrī Nāradamuni (as we see in the Nārada Bhakti Sūtra) and also to that of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

It's very good to do this kind of comparative work because then we can appreciate the special features that make each tradition special while recognizing the underlying spirituality unity in which all traditions are established! Also in prevents us from be...

How To Invoke the 12 Secret Kalis | Krama Stotram & The Wheel of Fire
Mar 18, 2025

After our lecture on The 12 Secret Kālīs | & The Most Closely Guarded Secret in Tantra where we introduced the powers of non-dual consciousness which flow in a 12-step sequence (which we argued was one of the subtlest teachings of Tantrik non-duality if not THE subtlest teachings), many were asking: "how do we invoke the 12 Kālīs, worship them, relate to them and incorporate them into our day-to-day sādhanā?" In this talk, we introduce one of the two Krama Stotrams and introduce Abhinava Gupta's "wheel of fire meditation" from Tantrasāra Chapter 4, which he received from his Krama g...

The Tantrik Worship of Krsna and Rādhā
Mar 16, 2025

Having explored the philosophy and life of Sri Krishna Chaitanya, and having outlined Bhakti in practice as part of last year's Gaur Purnima (Chaitanya Jayanti) celebration, we now turn to some more specialized themes in our study of Tantrik Vaishnavism beginning with some dhyāna mantras (meditation and visualization techniques) for Krishna and Rādhā Rāni!

Here is some of what we shared in the talk:

“I meditate on the golden hued Gauranga whose beautiful hair is bound by a string of pearls whose moonlike face beams a gentle smile his body is smeared with sa...
