Unknown instrument in the subway at two minutes to midnight, Metropolitan / Lorimer St station, New York, USA on 12th November – by Jonah Buchanan
Dec 15, 2025

“Descending the stairs, I was disappointed to see a two-digit number in the wait time for the train. the music started a couple minutes later. they had a pedal and an instrument i couldn’t identify. i wouldn’t say it was dreamy, and there’s not really a synonym i can find that captures it. maybe bewitching. the train came, they packed up and left, then my train came, and since then i’ve been googling things like “synth you can blow into” or “digital woodwind” trying to find out more.”

First big snow of the season, Pittsburgh, USA on 2nd December 2025 – by Dennis Funk
Dec 03, 2025

“This first big snow was really dreamy. It started late in the night after I’d gone to bed, and had already stopped by morning. When I woke up there was the shock of a white, white world and a few inches on the ground. I got lost in the stillness of the day, and watched little heaps tumble from branches when a breeze rattled through.”

Call to prayer from the ancient Armenian city of Ani, recorded across a closed border, in Summer 2024 – by Jeremy Dalmas
Oct 14, 2025

“This recording was taken from the yard of Vahandukht Melkonyan – an 89-year-old great-grandmother and the last person left living in an almost-abandoned Armenian village. Her home sits on the border with Turkey. Just a few hundred meters from her home, across that border, are the ruins of the famous 11th-century Armenian city of Ani. Even though Vahandukht looks at Ani from her garden every day, she has never been able to visit: this border has been closed to civilians for over a hundred years. But she is so close that she can hear sounds from the ancient city, including the...

Dusk, Harrier Hill, New York, USA on 13th September 2025 – by Jonah N. Buchanan
Oct 10, 2025

“After dinner we went to find a place to watch the sunset and wound up at a park a few miles up Route 9. It was dusk and we settled on a bench facing a pond where the fish were having a feeding frenzy. Their heads would ripple up out of the water to grab a bug and I tried to get a clean recording of the sound but couldn’t manage it. Every time their head popped up, one of us would laugh.”

Goats going home, Sabugueiro, Serra da Estrela, Portugal, late evening on 13th August 2025 – by Katherina Lindekens
Sep 09, 2025

“Late one August evening, my partner and I were driving through the mountains of Portugal’s Serra da Estrela. As we were passing through the village of Sabugueiro, we suddenly heard a chorus of bells. In a flash, we saw a shepherd leading a herd of goats to their shed for the night. We stopped the car and I followed them through the small, cobbled streets for a while, until they turned a final corner, leaving all the village dogs barking.

Ponte 25 de Abril, Lisbon, Portugal on 8th August 2025 around midnight – by Katherina Lindekens
Sep 09, 2025

“One of the sounds I associate most with Lisbon (where my mother was born), is the eerie polyphony of the Ponte 25 de abril. The red suspension bridge across the river Tejo hums and howls as cars and trucks drive over its metallic grating. Now and then, trains join in from the lower deck. This recording was made around midnight, right underneath the bridge on the north bank.

Aug 18, 2025

“On the morning of the second day whilst at Arvon Lumb Bank writers’ retreat I walked up the steep hill cow-heavy to Hepenstall Cemetery where Sylvia Plath is buried. I recorded my footsteps crossing the cemetery and the sounds that surrounded me whilst stood at her grave. I was so struck by the life, insects, birds, a lawn mower and at one point an aeroplane which on the recording sounds like something much more supernatural. On her grave there are some words that Ted Hughes chose to have engraved, they are not Sylvia’s but another writer’s. As I stood an...

While having a drink nearby the wind picked up and the boats and Jetty started making a wonderful noise. This vote happened on the same day that MPs – including Yvette Cooper who drafted the order to amend the Terrorism Act – dressed up in sashes to celebrate 97 years since the suffragette’s direct action tactics helped secure women’s right to vote. 111 Palestinians were killed by Israeli airstrikes on 2nd July in Gaza.”

Skudučiai communal drone, Vilnius, Lithuania on 27th May 2025 – by Adomas Zubė
Jun 03, 2025

“As part of the EBU International Audio Storytelling Festival, I organised a communal drone performance using skudučiai. Skudučiai (usually plural) are traditional Lithuanian folk instruments, simple wooden pipes, each producing a single pitch, meant to be played together, with or against each other, listening and arriving at shared melodies through connection in the moment. Each participant received a randomly selected pipe (kindly lent by my former high school music teacher, Ingrida) and joined in, following a few loose instructions. In the end, more than 80 people joined in and created beautiful textures and harmonies, idiosyncratic to the moment. The...

Memory bells next to a cascade waterfall in Himalaya, Nepal in April 2025 – by Tash Walker
May 20, 2025

“On route to Annapurna Basecamp which is a 12 day trek, we came across this vast waterfall, called a cascade as it features a series of small falls, all connecting to each other. Next to the waterfall was a Buddhist stupa that had memory bells adorned to the outside, each carved with a memory. As the bells rang, the waterfall rushed down the rocks to soundtrack them; it felt like the memories were brought back to life in that moment, carried by the flowing water.”

New Year’s Eve, leaning out of a window in East London, UK, one minute before midnight on 31st December 2024 – by Talia Randall
Jan 01, 2025

“Three minutes of fireworks recorded from 23:59 – 00:01 on New Year’s Eve. They get louder and more intense as midnight approaches. I leant out of a top-floor window and heard the rumble of distant fireworks bouncing off the trees behind the houses, then the closer bangs and party squeals from a few doors down. What you can’t hear are the panicked crows swooping around the treetops.”

“I left my recorder one afternoon under the sheet metal eaves of my parents’ house, anticipating the storm: you can hear the incessant thunder, the rain, the neighbour’s children playing, the wind, the birds, and much more…”

Storm Darragh, Powys, Wales on Saturday 7th December 2024 – by Matt Faulkner
Dec 09, 2024

“I was in Powys for a few days, staying in a converted barn for a long weekend and was unexpectedly impacted by Storm Darragh. At first the heavy winds and rain hit woke us up in the dead of night on Saturday morning, increasingly battering the roof until we lost power from late morning until Sunday. Here is a brief recording of the winds from inside the barn before it really kicked off. I have to give a lot of respect to the people who worked tirelessly clearing fallen trees and debris, and the engineers who worked relentlessly to ge...

San Martín Railway at night in Vedia, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina in November 2024 – by Joaquín Conde
Dec 01, 2024

“My father and I got into the car and hurried to the railroad crossing, willing to get there in time to record: just minutes earlier we heard the distant sound of a train about to leave town. We got there seconds before the locomotive rushed past us saturating the microphone. The freight cars picked up speed as they pulled away from the station but everything went silent at the peak of this crescendo. Only echoes remained, the ghost of a train heading west and the night gradually reclaiming its habitual sounds.

This recording is a statement of pr...

Frogs at Night in Yogyakarta, Java on 22nd November 2024 – by Arya Adyuta
Nov 27, 2024

“It’s the rainy season now, and at night frogs would show up and start making sounds—somehow it was like they’re talking to each other, forming a busy temporary town under the dark landscape of tall bushes. Rain caused high streams of water flowing, joining the crowded soundscape. I stood at a distance enough to observe, while a few motorbikes passed by, and the smell of the abating rain emerged.

I really cherished this sound, as it was tickling my ears these past few days (and that’s why I decided to record and send it).”

Frogtown, Los Angeles River, USA in April 2024 – by Alan Weedon
Nov 13, 2024

“I made it around dusk as I wanted to get the call of the Baja California frogs that live on this stretch of the river… it’s a part of the river which hasn’t completely been trapped in concrete as the water table is too high, and as such, the concrete bottom was never able to stick here. It’s a peculiar, but in my opinion stunningly surreal part of LA.”
