On Sunday, two gunmen opened fireon a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, killing 15 people and injuring dozens of others in the country’s deadliest mass shooting since 1996. According to authorities, the shooters were a father and son, and the father was shot and killed by the police while the son sustained “critical injuries.” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the shooting “an act of evil, antisemitism, terrorism”; investigators have said they are still working to understand the shooters’ motives.

Something I’ve learned over the years of talking about “The Jews” is that it helps to think critically about the things people are saying and address them head on. It has been my experience that antisemitism, like racism, thrives when swimming in ignorance. 

So my message for Jews, or friends of Jews interested in combatting antisemitism, is this: We have nothing to hide! It’s okay. All we need is defenders who know our history and aren’t ignorant enough to be tricked by antisemitism. You can let your guard down and address these issues honestly.

On Monday, the Trump administration announced a $12 billion bailout for farmers in response to “temporary trade market disruptions and increased production costs.” Most of the money — $11 billion — will be distributed as one-time payments through the Farmer Bridge Assistance (FBA) program, which supports row-crop farmers producing goods like corn, soybeans, oats, and cotton. The remaining funds will be used to support farmers producing crops not covered by the FBA. The aid comes as U.S. farmers report persistent challenges caused by trade disruptions linked to President Donald Trump’s tariff agenda.

On Friday, the European Commission (the executive arm of the European Union, or EU) announced that it is fining the social media company X $140 million for breaching transparency obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The European Commission accused the U.S.-based social media company of deceptive use of its “blue checkmark” validation feature, lack of advertisement transparency, and failure to provide access to public data. X owner Elon Musk responded to the European Commission’s announcement of the fine by calling the post “Bullshit.”

On Tuesday, Matt Van Epps (R) defeated State Rep. Aftyn Behn (D) in a special election to represent Tennessee’s Seventh Congressional District (TN-07). Van Epps, a former Army officer endorsed by President Donald Trump, received roughly 54% of the vote for a nine-point victory over Behn, a former social worker and community healthcare organizer. Former Rep. Mark Green’s (R) resignation in July triggered the special election, and the race drew national attention and significant outside spending. On Monday, the White House said that on September 2, the military carried out a follow-up strike on a suspected drug-running boat in the Caribbean after two boat occupants survived an initial strike. The statement follows a Washington Post reportpublished Friday that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized military action to kill everyone on board the boat (though it is unclear whether he was aware of the second strike on the two survivors). If carried out as described, the second strike may have violated international law by killing incapacitated enemy combatants.

Last Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed legislation to reopen the government that contained several additional provisions, including a ban on products made with THC derived from hemp. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the consolidated cases of Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump and Trump v. V.O.S. Selections, Inc., both of which challenged some of the president’s authority to unilaterally issue foreign duties. Trump has justified his broad “reciprocal tariffs” on U.S trading partners by declaring a national emergency under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), which prompted the legal challenges. The court’s decision could set the precedent for presidential authority over trade and the use of emergency powers.

On Saturday, the ongoing government shutdown caused federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to lapse. It also serves as a vote of confidence in his administration, which has prioritized spending cuts and other large-scale reforms. On Monday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2–1 that President Donald Trump can deploy Oregon National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, finding it was likely that the president had “lawfully exercised his statutory authority” in mobilizing the Guard. The decision lifted District Judge Karin Immergut’s temporary block on the Oregon soldiers’ deployment, and the Trump administration asked the judge to lift a second order barring all federalized National Guard troops from deploying to the city. Last Tuesday, Politico publishedscreenshots of text messages sent by members of Young Republicans, an organization for Republican party members between 18 and 40 years old, that featured offensive jokes and racist language. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case challenging the congressional map Louisiana adopted in 2022, the second time the court has considered the case. The challenge centers on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965, which prohibits voting laws or districting practices that give members of a racial group less opportunity than others to elect candidates of their choice. During arguments, the court’s conservative justices signaled their support for narrowing or overturning Section 2.

Last Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the Nobel Prize winners for 2025. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a challenge to a Colorado law banning “conversion therapy,” or psychiatric treatment intended to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, for minors. A majority of justices appeared more sympathetic to the plaintiff, a licensed counselor practicing conversion talk therapy who says the law discriminates against her based on her views. On Friday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said that the United States had struck a small boat in international waters off the coast of Venezuela, killing four people. Hegseth alleged that the boat was operated by the drug cartel Tren de Aragua and was trafficking narcotics to the United States. The strike is the fourth confirmed time the Trump administration has sunk a small craft it alleges was controlled by “narco-terrorists,” including a strike on September 2 that killed 11 and two others on September 15 and September 19.

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump delivered an address to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York sharply critical of the international organization and member countries over immigration, climate policy, and other issues. On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation adding new requirements for H-1B visas, which grant temporary work authorization to noncitizens in specialty occupations. The new rules compel new applicants to pay $100,000 to apply for the visa (with exceptions granted by the secretary of Homeland Security) and directs the secretary of State to ensure compliance with the new regulations. The $100,000 fee will begin to apply at the start of the next H-1B lottery cycle in March 2026.

On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted 11–1 to cut interest rates by 0.25% to 4%–4.25%, their first rate cut in nine months. The central bank’s policymakers cited the weakening labor market as the basis for the cut but noted that they are still concerned about potential inflation. However, the committee signaled that they are likely to approve two more rate cuts this year.

As the academic year gets underway, a growing number of U.S. states have enacted laws banning or restricting cell phone use in schools. 17 states and Washington, D.C. implemented new rules this year, joining several other states with existing restrictions. Scores of school districts and individual schools have also enacted their own policies. These laws range from incentives for schools to curtail phone use to prohibitions only in classrooms to outright bans for the entire school day, with different rules for different age groups.

On Saturday, Romania said that it had detected a Russian drone in its airspace during an air patrol mission. On Wednesday, Charlie Kirk, a conservative political activist and commentator, was shot and killed at an outdoor event at Utah Valley University. According to university officials, Kirk had been speaking for about 20 minutes when a single shot rang out, appearing to strike him in the neck. Officials said they believe the shot was fired from a building about 200 yards away, and the suspected shooter is still at large.

On Friday, August 22, 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was stabbed to death on a light-rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina. Police arrested 34-year-old ex-convict Decarlos Brown Jr. as a suspect in Zarutska’s death and charged him with murder. On Tuesday, the Justice Department also charged Brown with a federal crime.

On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 22,000 in August, while the unemployment rate rose from 4.2% to 4.3%. The healthcare sector accounted for roughly 31,000 new jobs, but declining employment in the federal government, manufacturing, and professional services offset some of those gains; the BLS also revised June’s employment numbers down by 27,000 and July’s numbers up by 6,000. Separately, on Tuesday, the BLS reported that the U.S. added 911,000 fewer jobs between March 2024 and March 2025 than previously estimated, adding to concerns about the health of the job market.

On Wednesday, the U.S. military sank a small boat in the southern Caribbean Sea, killing 11 people. U.S. officials claimed the boat was transporting drugs to the United States from Venezuela and alleged the 11 people on board were narco-terrorist members of the international gang Tren de Aragua (TDA). In recent years, several U.S. states and a number of countries have legalized Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), also known as physician-assisted suicide or physician-assisted death. While definitions vary, the practice generally allows people facing imminent death from a terminal illness to end their lives by administering drugs with support and supervision from a doctor (or team of doctors). In some countries, people with certain chronic illnesses and disabilities are also eligible for MAID. On Friday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled in a 7–4 decision that President Donald Trump had overstepped his authority in imposing tariffs unilaterally, upholding a lower court decision. On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order instructing the attorney general to prosecute unlawful acts that involve desecrating the American flag. The order directs the attorney general to refer acts involving flag destruction that may violate state or local laws to the relevant local authorities; it also calls for litigation to clarify the extent of First Amendment protections for such acts. Though the order does not stipulate a specific punishment, President Trump said that violators will face one year in jail.

In a letter posted to Truth Social on Monday night, President Donald Trump ordered the removal of Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from her position for alleged mortgage fraud. Citing the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 and his powers under Article II of the Constitution, Trump stated that he was removing Cook “for cause.” Cook responded by saying that “no cause exists under the law” and that the president did not have the authority to fire her.

On Thursday, a New York appeals court threw out a $527 million penalty against President Donald Trump resulting from a 2024 civil fraud judgment. The five-justice panel unanimously agreed to dismiss the fine but disagreed on other points, ultimately deciding to leave the other penalties against Trump in place — including barring Trump from serving in top roles at any New York company for three years, extending a similar ban to his sons (Eric and Donald Jr.) for two years, and installing an independent monitor for the Trump Organization.

On Friday, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents raided the Maryland home and Washington, D.C. office of John Bolton, former national security adviser during President Donald Trump’s first term. According to a senior U.S. official, the search was connected to an investigation into Bolton’s possible use of a private email server to share classified documents with his wife and daughter while he was working in the White House. Bolton was not detained and has not been charged with any crimes.

On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed reports that the Trump administration is working on a deal with Intel that would grant the U.S. government a 10% stake in the computer technology company. The possible agreement, first reported on August 14, may involveconverting roughly $10.86 billion in federal grants issued to Intel during the Biden administration into equity in the company, though the exact mechanism for doing so is unclear.
