Arctic Front and First Snowfall

The Chicago area is under a Winter Storm Watch for late Sunday night into Monday due to an Arctic front and lake-effect snow potential. Rain is expected Saturday evening, transitioning to snow overnight, with the heaviest snow likely from midnight to 8 a.m. Monday. (Or 10am). 

Temperatures will drop sharply, with highs in the 30s Sunday and Monday, and wind chills in the teens Monday morning.

Using the National Weather Service Wet Bulb Global Temperature calculator it becomes apparent that the WBGT was 93°F at that time. This translates to 34°C. This is the very hottest of human survival. This episode discusses Wet-bulb-globe temperature which is often referred to as “Wet-bulb” temperature. In cold weather the term Wet-bulb temperature accurately refers to Wet-bulb temperature. In hot weather it usually refers to Wet-bulb-globe temperature.

Wet bulb temperature, black globe temperature and dry bulb temperature are all necessary in order to figure out the Wet-bulb-globe temperature. There are other variables needed as well such as sun angle, solar radiation (cloud cover) and wind speed.
