This week it's been what has become an annual end to the O60s cricket season with the Tri-Nations tournament featuring six matches in three days with all four competing sides playing against each other.

Unfortunately the weather intervened and only three of the six matches took place.

So we look at what happened between England and the England Lions, Scotland and Wales and then the final match to beat the weather which was England Lions versus Scotland

Six of the eight O60s finals finally got the go ahead from the weather and all finished on Tuesday Sept 9th

Along with the two O70s finals that were played on Thursday Sept 4th. Unfortunately the O70s Cup final between Oxfordshire and Kent on Thursday Sept 11th was abandoned so the trophy is shared

Having experienced hardly any cancellations due to adverse weather the weather finally got involved on finals week!

A number of the O60s finals scheduled for Tuesday Sept 2nd were postponed until Tuesday Sept 9th

We are recording on Wednesday Sept 3rd as Trevor is away from early on the 4th. We cover the O60s finals that survived plus the re-arranged O70s semi-finals that happened on Sunday August 31st

The last week in August is semi-final week in Seniors Cricket

All 16 semi-finals in the various O60s competitions were completed

The fifth and final match in the Grey Ashes series ended in a last ball tie! The series thus finishes 2-2 which means Australia retain the Grey Ashes. 

England batted first for the first time in the series and made 269. Then it rained, for a long time. Finally the Australian innings got underway with a DLS target of 194 in 26 overs. 

At 7/2 the Aussies were in trouble but man of the series Darren Smith, who had cancelled his flight home because of the rain delay, strode in and made 97. 

It came down to 7 needed off...

The Malta Seniors Cricket Festival took place between the 28th of March and the 5th of April at the Marsa sports club under the direction of tournament, founder and director Frank Spiteri and tournament referee Barrie Burns.

Eight teams took part in this event which has been going since 2018 and not only provides a fantastic opportunity to play pre-season warm weather cricket but also raises not insignificant money for local charities and this year that included Ron Hedley's prostate cancer awareness walk fund as Ron organised a walk during the event.

Tony Panecasio played a key part in Australia winning the O60s 2024 World Cup in Chennai and the Grey Ashes in November and December 2024.

Tony had combined figures across the World Cup semi-final and final of 10-45 with his 4-32 in the final including a couple of stunning caught and bowled's. He won the trophy for most wickets at the 2024 O60s World Cup.

In the Grey Ashes Tony took 10 wickets in the series bowling a full compliment of 9 overs in 4 of the 5 matches including 2 when he wasn’t in the batting XI.

In a last over finish Australia beat England by 2 wickets to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Grey Ashes. A low scoring tense match saw England almost valiantly defend 169 but it wasn’t to be. So congratulations to the Australians.

It’s been the final week of the over 60s and over 70s county cricket championship competitions with eight finals scheduled for the O60s and the 1st XI Cup final for the O70s

But no-one told the weather!

Of the 9 finals 4 will now be played at the start of the 2025 season, 2 were decided by DLS and 3 were completed.

Congratulations to all the winners - as well as Essex who won the O60s 4th Division and Hertfordshire who are champions of the O70s 2nd XI competition.

England win the O70s World Cup! 

Our guest on this special episode is England's World Cup winning captain John Evans from Gloucestershire

John shares with us what it was like to be the England captain particularly during the final against Australia, a team that England had lost to in the group stages.

Grant was at the final at Wormsley as a spectator so was able to witness first hand England's terrific victory.

What a week its been for O60s / 70s cricket.

Richard Merriman steps down as England O60s skipper and is replaced by vice-captain Edward Gordon-Lennox. Then a couple of days later there is the announcement of the squad to travel to Australia for the Grey Ashes. Six players included who didn't play in the World Cup including a couple we don't really know.

The O60s 1st XI Group competitions concluded this week so we look at the results and how they then affected the make up of the phase two matches in which the top two teams from each of the six groups have progressed into the last 12 for the cup competition.

The 12 are divided into two groups based on geographical location and they will play each other home and away between July 9th and August 27th with the exception that you don't play the team you already play in your regional group.

This series will be a big challenge for Richard and his team as they come up against opposition containing former international and first-class players led by Saleem Malik who played 386 international matches, including 103 Test matches, for Pakistan
