The Epstein Scandal (Part Two: The Heiress & the Predator)
Dec 14, 2025"If Jeffrey was the enigma, she was the translator."
On the morning of 5 November 1991, a body was found floating in the Atlantic near the Canary Islands. It was Robert Maxwell, one of Britain's most famous and controversial businessman. Hours earlier he had vanished from his yacht, the Lady Ghislaine, anchored off the Spanish coast. His death immediately became front-page news in the UK and across Europe, especially when it came to light that Maxwell's businesses had engaged in massive frauds.
For Maxwell's youngest daughter, Ghislaine, the loss was more than financial. With her father dead and...
The Epstein Scandal (Part One: The Money Had To Come From Somewhere)
Nov 26, 2025"He stood out as this young guy in this weird coat."
In 1991, business magnate Leslie Wexner signed a general power of attorney that gave Jeffrey Epstein authority to act on his behalf in nearly all matters of business and finance. The document allowed Epstein, a young financial consultant that Wexner had just met a few years prior, to sign checks, open and close bank accounts, buy and sell property, transfer assets, and borrow money in Wexner's name. The scope of the arrangement was unparalleled.
The decades prior to this saw Epstein ascend through the financial world...

Encephalitis Lethargica
Nov 11, 2025"No fiction author would have had the temerity to invent a disorder of such incredible clinical diversity and puzzling behavior."
In the winter of 1916-1917, as World War I raged, physicians in Europe began noticing bizarre cases of brain illness. Thousands arrived at hospitals with high fevers, headaches, confusion, and a host of other factors - suspected at first to be meningitis or even poisoning - yet none of the explanations fit. What all of these patients shared was either an overwhelming drowsiness or psychotic agitation.
By late 1918, as the great influenza pandemic struck, this new "...
The Villisca Axe Murders (Part Two: Ghosts On The Rails)
Oct 31, 2025"The slaying of the entire family promises to become a mystery which will take much time to unravel..."
By the first anniversary of the Villisca murders, the Moore house stood shuttered. The local sheriff had nothing new to add to the case file. Evidence had spoiled, witnesses had drifted, and rumor had begun to harden into folklore.
In the years that would follow, several suspects would be presented to local officials, including drifters and men with a prior history of violence. But one after another, all were compared to the evidence and found lacking, resulting in...
The Villisca Axe Murders (Part One: A Town Asleep)
Oct 27, 2025"Call the marshal. Tell him to come quick. There's something awful in there."
On the morning of 10 June 1912, Mary Peckham stepped out her back door to hang her laundry. Her house stood next to the Moore family's home in Villisca, Iowa; close enough that she could usually hear the soft chaos of their mornings. The Moores were early risers, and their routine rarely varied.
That morning, though, the house next door was silent. And that stillness unsettled Mary Peckham. She eventually sought help and had a Moore relative drop by to check in on the family...
Race Against Terror w/Jake Tapper
Oct 07, 2025On this special episode of Unresolved, Micheal is joined by bestselling author and CNN lead anchor Jake Tapper to discuss his new book, Race Against Terror, a nonfiction thriller that begins on a crowded refugee ship in the Mediterranean and ends in a courtroom in Brooklyn.
The book revolves around Ibrahim Sulieman Adnan Harun, also known as Spin Ghul ("The White Rose"), an al-Qaeda jihadist who was prosecuted for his actions during the War on Terror; as well as the family of an American soldier killed during an ambush by Spin Ghul. Along the way, you...
Julie Mott
Oct 06, 2025"We just want our daughter's remains returned so we can have some closure to our grief."
On 15 August 2015, employees at the Mission Park Funeral Chapels North in San Antonio, TX closed up for the evening. They'd just held a service for a young woman named Julie Mott who had perished after a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. By 4:30 PM that Saturday, the doors were locked and the ADT alarm system was set.
When staff returned to the facility the following morning, they were surprised to see that Julie's casket had been moved from an empty hallway...

The California Medfly Attack
Sep 23, 2025"State officials have probably noticed an increase as well as an unusual distribution of Medfly infestation in Los Angeles County since March 1989. This was no coincidence."
The Mediterranean fruit fly, better known as the medfly, is about as unassuming as an insect can get. But the pest, native to sub-Saharan Africa, comes with enormous stakes. The medfly can infest more than 200 plant species, proving to be a nightmare for farmers everywhere. For farmers in California, though, they're an existential threat. That's why state officials treat every sighting like a five-alarm fire.
California has been fighting medfly...
Holly Seiler
Sep 15, 2025"It was clearly part of our investigation that she was killed prior to the fire, and the fire was used to cover up her murder."
On the morning of 20 October 2016, firefighters were called to a quiet suburban neighborhood in Lockport, New York. There, they found a small fire burning in the front bedroom of a duplex, which was easily quelled. However, amidst the charred linens was the body of the homeowner, 54-year-old Holly Seiler.
Initially believing this was a fatal accident, Holly's relatives and neighbors had no reason to feel alarmed. But the medical examiner would...
Thurston County Cat Killer
Aug 31, 2025"Serial killers in the past have often been found to have started with animal torture."
In October 2017, the mutilated body of a cat was found in a rural area outside of Olympia, Washington. At the time, people tried to explain it away. Maybe it was a car. Maybe coyotes. Nobody wanted to consider the alternative.
But as winter turned into 2018, more fragments turned up. Severed limbs in a field outside of Lacey, a suburb outside of Olympia. Another partial body a week later. No witnesses, no clear pattern, just grisly remains. Maybe it was scavengers, some...
Phantom Clowns
Aug 10, 2025“... to date, there are no confirmed reports of any clowns actually abducting, harming, or killing kids… There just aren’t. There are zero.”
Do you remember when there were a bunch of clown sightings a few years back? It seemed like every week brought new reports of creepy clowns lurking at the edge of woods, roaming neighborhoods, and leering from parking lots. They waved at startled onlookers, chased kids with knives, or whispered from the tree line... at least, that's what people said.
People flooded 911 lines with calls about these boogeymen in big shoes, yet concrete evidence...

The Butcher Baker (Part Four: Unfinished)
Jul 28, 2025“On this day we should only remember his many victims and all of their families... As far as Hansen is concerned, this world is better without him.”
In August 2014, 75-year-old Robert Hansen took his last breath at a hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. The notorious serial killer spent his final decades alive incarcerated, first in Pennsylvania and then in Alaska, saying little of importance to anyone.
But even now, more than a decade after his death, questions remain. Not only of the victims Hansen confessed to killing, such as Eklutna Annie, but those he refused to accept respon...
The Butcher Baker (Part Three: In Plain Sight)
Jul 20, 2025"You can't r*** a prostitute, can you?"
In the Fall of 1983, Robert Hansen was arrested after the daring escape of 17-year-old Cindy Paulson. With Paulson’s testimony and an FBI profile pointing squarely at Hansen, Alaska State Troopers obtained a warrant and uncovered damning evidence in Hansen’s home. There, they found a hunting rifle linked to multiple murders, jewelry and other belongings from several victims, as well as a haunting map leading them to more than a dozen bodies.
In the weeks and months that followed, authorities would begin to dig into Robert Hansen's backstory, unco...

The Butcher Baker (Part Two: Catch & Release)
Jul 07, 2025"Guys, I've got a map here... with a lot of X's."
Just after 5:00 AM on 13 June 1983, police in Anchorage, Alaska arrive at a seedy motor inn on Gambell Street. Inside room 110 is a young girl huddled on the bed, barefoot, shivering, and still wearing a pair of handcuffs. Her name is Cindy Paulson, and minutes earlier she had made a run for her life.
Through Cindy's extraordinary account, police link her case to a local resident, Robert Hansen. Hansen, a local baker and avid hunter, was well-known and liked by almost all who knew him, including...
The Butcher Baker (Part One: The Less Dead)
Jun 30, 2025"Workers and drug dealers and dancers came and went, many with few ties to the state and no one to notice if they went missing..."
In the early 1980s, a quiet pattern had begun to form: women were disappearing in the region surrounding Anchorage. Many had come to Alaska in order to escape their problems or to otherwise have a fresh start in the "Last Frontier." But amidst a transient population, these women's disappearances were shrugged off, presumed to have simply gotten lost in the shuffle.
Following the discovery of a few bodies, however, investigators with...
D.B. Cooper
Jun 16, 2025"Miss, you’d better look at that note. I have a bomb."
In November 1971, a man in a suit boarded a flight from Portland to Seattle, calmly handed a note to a flight attendant, and claimed he had a bomb. He demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck on standby. Hours later, somewhere over the dense forests of the Pacific Northwest, he opened the rear stairway of the plane and vanished into the night.
Was it a fatal leap, the perfect getaway, or the birth of a new identity? Fifty years later, no one kn...
The Zone of Silence
Jun 01, 2025"I don't believe in any nonsense... but I'll keep an open mind. Out here, who knows?"
In July of 1970, an Athena RTV rocket was launched from Green River, Utah. Containing the radioactive element cobalt-57, the rocket was supposed to arc harmlessly down in White Sands, New Mexico. But instead it went rogue, streaking south over the Mexican border to a desolate area near the Durango-Chihuahua state line.
This location, known by many as the "Zone of Silence," has long held a reputation for the unexplained. Dating back to the 1800s, local homesteaders have claimed to witness "...
Laura Howard
May 25, 2025"We have no idea how many other victims are out there, past and present."
In April 2013, relatives of 53-year-old Laura Howard began to grow concerned. She wasn't responding to any phone calls, and the tone of her text messages changed. It felt as if someone else was texting with her phone. She'd even failed to pick up her son from the airport and wasn't responding to any of her neighbors' knocks at the door. Her curtains were drawn and her vehicle was missing.
Police, having briefly dropped by Laura's home in April, returned again in early...
The Dardeen Family
May 18, 2025"I believe it was a very personal, deliberate thing."
On 16 November 1987, the three-member Dardeen family returned to their rural home in Ina, Illinois after a weekend away. As Thanksgiving approached, 30-year-old Elaine, 29-year-old Keith, and 3-year-old Peter spent two days visiting with Elaine's family in nearby Albion. Elaine, nearing the end of her second pregnancy, expected to give birth to a baby girl named Casey in the near-future.
Days later, though, Keith was a complete no-show for work. A usually punctual and responsible man, Keith's absence was noted by his coworkers and supervisors, who began trying...
"The Buzzer" (UVB-76)
May 11, 2025"There's absolutely no information in the signal."
For decades now, an odd and mysterious audio signal has operated on the shortwave spectrum. Since the late 1970s, a strange pulsating sound has repeated at 4625 kilohertz. There is never a formal introduction. There are no hosts or music. Only on occasion will a voice step in, and when it does, it reads off some words and names in a monotonous Russian accent before disappearing once more.
No country or agency has ever attempted to claim or explain the signal. Rumors persist about its purpose: everything from a "dead...
The Lead Masks Case (Part Two: Seekers)
Apr 27, 2025"I have no doubt they died of an experiment with psychic forces for which they were ill-prepared and which turned out to be fatal."
By the end of 1967, the official investigation into the Lead Masks Case was brought to a close. The final police report listed the cause of death for both Miguel José Viana and Manoel Pereira da Cruz as undetermined.
There was no evidence of foul play. No external injuries. No signs of trauma. The bodies had not been robbed, nor had they been bound or restrained. No crime, as defined by Brazilian law, h...
The Lead Masks Case (Part One: Vintém Hill)
Apr 20, 2025“16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after effect protect metals await signal mask.”
On 20 August 1966, a teenager was flying a kite on Vintém Hill, a rural location outside of Niterói, Brazil. He wasn't looking for anything unusual that Saturday afternoon, but partway up the hill, he discovered what looked like two mannequins. He'd rush home and tell his mother, who immediately alerted police.
Hours later, authorities arrived at the scene and documented what they found: two men laying side by side on the grass, arms and legs outstretched. There was no sign of violen...

Toyah Cordingley (Re-Release)
Mar 30, 2025"Finding her body has burnt an indelible image in my mind. It is something a father should never have to suffer."
On the morning of 22 October 2018, family and friends of missing 24-year-old Toyah Cordingley would scour the area around Wangetti Beach, a quiet and secluded stretch of sand not too far away from Toyah's hometown of Cairns. There - partially buried in sand dunes - Toyah's body would be found, having endured "visible, violent injuries" before her death.
In the years since, police officials have remained tight-lipped about the specific details of their sprawling investigation. But...

Feb 23, 2025"... they don't say whether she's still alive or where she is or what her name is. They don't tell you anything but that she was a middle-aged woman who was inspired by God and God spoke to her, so she started speaking God's word."
In September 2021, a mysterious Reddit account surfaced, claiming to be the long-lost leader of a controversial religious movement. Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell
Feb 16, 2025"OFFICER SHOT. WHITE CHEVY VAN. NO PLATE."
In the early morning hours of 27 October 2006, Deputy Jeffrey Mitchell of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office told dispatchers that he was pulling over a white Chevy van off of rural Highway 16. Seven minutes later, his radio "keyed," a common sign of distress. After failing to respond to calls on his radio and cell phone, dispatchers sent out other deputies to Mitchell's last known location with lights and sirens.
Arriving just minutes later, officers found Deputy Mitchell laying on the ground near his vehicle, bleeding from a single gunshot wound...

Feb 09, 2025"... it's baffling. I've never come across a case where someone just vanished. And we have no clue, no reports of where she might be or what might have happened to her. I've not come across a case like that."
On the afternoon of Monday, 20 December 2021, three-year-old Lina Sardar Khil was playing outside of her family's apartment in San Antonio, Texas. N-44 (Karel Novák)
Feb 02, 2025"His personal details were never known to him, and he could only assume his origins based on a nameplate he had as a child."
On 24 June 1955, a Czechoslovakian State Security Patrol detained an unknown man near the Slovak-Polish border. Carrying no identification, the man communicated almost entirely through hand gestures. During interrogation, authorities would discover that he was deaf and mute, although both claims were met with a fair amount of skepticism. A comprehensive, nationwide investigation failed to turn up any sign of his identity.
Over the next twenty-six years, through many twists and turns, the...
Chip Campbell (Re-Release)
Jan 26, 2025"At this point, I just want closure for the family... I just want to be able to bury my friend."
When 36-year-old Chip Campbell vanished from his Florida home in 2016, his life was already spiraling out of control. His house was found in disarray, his dog left outside, and his personal belongings scattered. Days later, he was last seen at a local gas station, looking disheveled and carrying backpacks that would later be recovered under mysterious circumstances.
With ties to substance abuse, suspicious activity at his home, and a roommate with a criminal history, Chip's disappearance r...

The Springfield Three (Part Five: "Closure")
Dec 22, 2024"It's like those three missing girls from Springfield that still haven't been found... it's just been an ongoing thing."
On 7 June 1992, Sherrill Levitt, 47, her daughter Suzanne Streeter, 19, and Suzanne’s friend Stacy McCall, 18, vanished without a trace. Despite decades of investigation and multiple efforts to revive the case, authorities have continually faced the same dead ends encountered in the initial probe.
Over the years, the mystery has captivated amateur sleuths and online communities, who’ve developed countless theories in an attempt to explain the trio’s disappearance. Now, as the 33rd anniversary approaches, their fate remains one of...
The Springfield Three (Part Four: No End)
Dec 15, 2024"All we could say is missing. There's no end. There's no end to that story."
In November of 1995, the Missouri Violence Crime Support Unit finalized a review of Springfield P.D.'s investigation into the disappearance of Sherrill Levitt, Suzanne Streeter, and Stacy McCall. During their analysis, they agreed with the suspect list developed by investigators, but believed they should be re-prioritized. This led investigators to shuffle up the deck and begin exploring suspects they'd earlier discounted.
First came Robert Craig Cox, a known abductor and armed robber that was connected to a number of other...
The Springfield Three (Part Three: Steven Garrison and the Galloping Goose)
Dec 08, 2024"... we've run out of leads to work... there's just nothing coming in."
In 1995, authorities decided to suspend the investigation into the disappearance of three women from Springfield, Missouri. This decision followed years of sporadic progress, including a grand jury review in 1994 that ultimately concluded without issuing any indictments.
However, later that year, Steven Garrison - a suspect with tenuous ties to the case - stood trial for an unrelated crime. Strangely, that crime revealed an eerie connection to the Springfield Three’s mysterious disappearance in 1992...

The Springfield Three (Part Two: 92-40169)
Nov 30, 2024"I'm beginning to think they're probably at the bottom of a lake somewhere. If they were alive, I'm sure, surely by now, somehow they would have contacted us."
In the days, weeks, and months following the disappearance of three women from Springfield, Missouri, a high-profile search ensued. Authorities attempted to turn over every stone in the women's past, hoping they'd find some tantalizing lead that would point directly to them. Sadly, no such evidence was unearthed.
As the loved ones of the three women struggled to grieve with this uncertainty weighing upon them, investigators highlighted certain...

On the evening of 6 June 1993, things were calm in the small town of Windsor, North Carolina. Located in the state's Inner Banks region, Windsor was the type of town where everybody seemed to know everybody. Where residents felt safe leaving their front doors unlocked. These symptoms came upon suddenly, seemingly preceded by a strange high-frequency noise. Mike DeBardeleben (Part Six: A Man Without Morals)
Mar 18, 2024"I think this man's record and conviction do not fully apprise the court of this man's threat to society."
Following his 1983 arrest, Mike DeBardeleben would stand trial for various offenses. First came a series of counterfeiting trials in Tennessee and North Carolina, which were then followed by a number of trials related to the violent crimes, abductions and assaults that DeBardeleben had carried out in Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia. After receiving an almost-comical amount of time - 375 years plus two additional life sentences - DeBardeleben would slowly rot behind bars, before dying of pneumonia in January of 2011.<...

Mar 12, 2024"... Mike DeBardeleben is the best-documented sexual sadist since the Marquis de Sade. He's the one I used as the standard for all others."
Awaiting trial for the litany of crimes he'd committed over several years, Mike DeBardeleben couldn't do anything as authorities continued to dig around in his background. They'd learned about all of his failures - his familial relationships, his schooling, his marriages, his business - but now began trying to figure out how that resulted in this career criminal, who stood accused of not just counterfeiting, but assault, rape, kidnapping, and murder.
As investigators...
Mike DeBardeleben (Part Four: Unsub)
Mar 04, 2024"I'll tell you what's going down. I had an ex-old lady who really pissed me off and f***ed me over. I just want to get back at women."
After his arrest in May 1983, the Secret Service began looking into the background of 43-year-old Mike DeBardeleben to determine what he had been up to. Agents knew that the "Mall Passer" had been counterfeiting and distributing his own bogus $20 bills, but evidence indicated he had been up to much more than that over many years, stretching back to over a decade beforehand.
As investigators nationwide began charting...
Mike DeBardeleben (Part Three: Accomplices)
Feb 19, 2024"I feel that I have been unjustly tormented, degraded and shit upon by society... In order to regain an adequate self-image, I feel compelled to somehow restore my self-respect..."
Shortly after his stint at Western State Hospital in Virginia, Mike DeBardeleben would begin a series of relationships with young women. All followed a series of repeated steps, centered around breaking down the women in question and making them dependent entirely upon Mike. This was usually accomplished through typical emotional abuser techniques, but also contained a significant element of physical and sexual abuse.
Meanwhile, Mike's criminal behavior...
Mike DeBardeleben (Part Two: Antisocial)
Feb 13, 2024"From an early age, I can recall wanting to please my parents but being frustrated by some of their unrealistic demands..."
Following the end of the lengthy "Mall Passer" investigation, the Secret Service attempted to unlock the secrets of the man they'd arrested, 43-year-old Mike DeBardeleben. However, as they attempted to track down the machine he'd used to print his counterfeit bills, investigators ended up uncovering evidence of even more heinous crimes.
As they learned more about the man they'd arrested, federal agents discovered that there had been ample warning signs for years. Dating back to...
Mike DeBardeleben (Part One: The Mall Passer)
Feb 05, 2024"His technique was to go from shopping center to shopping center, passing phony notes at malls. You can pass $20 bills in a real hurry that way."
In August 1979, a prominent counterfeiter attracted the attention of the U.S. Secret Service. Having created his own bogus $20 bills, this individual would begin to distribute them throughout the continental United States, using them in at least 44 states and netting more than $130,000 in the process.
Over roughly four years, federal investigators attempted to determine who this individual was and whether he was part of a larger network. Dubbed the "Mall...

On the evening of 29 July 2020, a silver Chevy Impala was found engulfed in flame in a Tacoma, Washington alleyway. This was a street that didn't receive much thru-traffic, so there weren't any security or surveillance cameras, making it the perfect place to torch a car and get away without being seen.
Investigators would attempt to track down the owner of the vehicle, 50-year-old Diana Davis from nearby Auburn, but were unable to find...
